Why yes you can you play pickleball on a tennis court indeed.
This is a great question since Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in the world.
There are about 20,000 pickleball courts in the USA but about 2 million pickleball players.
To put this in perspective there are about 250,000 tennis courts in the USA with about 18 million tennis players.
You can easily convert an existing tennis court into 1 – 4 pickleball courts depending on your needs, time, budget and restrictions. Since a tennis court is is 120 feet by 60 feet in size ( the playing surface is actually 36 x 78 feet for doubles and 27 x 78 feet for singles) you can create several pickleball courts on a single tennis court. You may not want to add 4 pickleball courts since it would be a bit crowded. Some of these configuration will require you to think and play outside the lines. Also the tennis net is 36 inches tall while the pickleball net is 34 inches so you’ll need a way to reduce or tie down the net. The pickleball net is actually 36 inches at the edges and 34 inches in the center so tying down the center will work. If you can’t that’s okay, pickleball will still be fun!!
From the center tennis court line measure out 10 feet to the sides and mark for the outer pickleball court lines. Then measure and mark 7 feet away from the net for the non-volley zone and then mark 15 feet further for the pickleball baseline. So the baseline is 22 feet away from the net. Connect the outer edges of the baseline and connect the non-volley zone from the edges to the middle. Do the same for the other side of the court. Congratulations You now have a regulation size pickleball court with a right service area, a left service area, a non-volley zone and a baseline. You’ll end up with a court 44 feet long by 20 feet wide.
Use tape to lay down the lines. You will need at least 200 feet of tape (more if you don’t measure things very will, like me). You can use pickleball court tape or a pickleball line set.
You should end up with a pickleball court that looks something like this:
These are the simple instructions for temporarily converting a tennis court into one pickleball court. You may need some pickleball paddles, pickleball balls and a pickleball net.
